Le beau mariage
Éric Rohmer, France, 1982o
Sabine, a young student living in Le Mans, breaks up with her married lover and decides to finally get married herself – to whom is a secondary consideration. Her best friend Clarisse introduces her to her cousin Edmond, a young, successful and single lawyer from Paris. Sabine decides that he, and no one else, is to be her husband. But Edmond does not seem too interested.
The scope of Le Beau Mariage is limited, but everything within it is well-defined and magically, unexpectedly, illuminating. One has the feeling – rare in commercial films – of having met romantic characters who in no way deny the social and political complexities of the real world that exists just outside the view of the camera. [Excerpt]
