The film does not so much lionise [Matthew McConaughey's] Mickey as use him to expose the flaws in the British society that accommodates him: a landed gentry all too ready to sell out, a fourth estate desperate to be recognised by the big boys, and amorally rapacious newcomers. And so this ironically titled film defines its characters’ gentlemanliness largely in negative, or reduces it to an issue of style, as witty, well-groomed, wife-loving Mickey and his associates outclass all the other thugs. It is a coarse, convoluted, comical caper that exults in the joys of genre. [Excerpt]

Was Hugh Grant alles kann, wenn er nicht den ewigen Buben spielen muss, zeigt er in dieser rasanten Komödie als höhnischer Opportunist, der auch als Erzähler durch den Film führt. Die Besetzung ist exzellent, die Dialoge fliegen schnell und scharf, die Handlung überrascht mit mehreren Twists, in einem Satz: Dieser Film, in dem fast nur Verbrecher auftreten, hat einen hohen Unterhaltungswert.

A la fois hommage au cinéma et polar rythmé, le nouveau film de Guy Ritchie témoigne d’une mise en scène redoutablement intelligente, grâce à un scénario à tiroir des plus ingénieux. Absolument jubilatoire.

Ambiance, personnages, dialogues décalés mènent la danse dans une réalisation sophistiquée. A une cadence qui décoiffe.
